Dashing outside, I instantly knew what was happening: Mel was having her baby! Preparing a makeshift obstetrics ward in the Canadian sheild was a difficult task, but I suceeded, with help from my trusty partner Graham, in delivering a healthy baby girl. Taking a well earned break, I reclined in my tent to relax. My breif repose was interupted by a 900lb bear, who clawed through the wall of my tent. Leaping out, I instantly saw the look of pure savage on the bear's bloodstained maw. I knew at that moment, that the bear had devoured Mel's baby. Filled with rage, I roundhouse kicked the bruin in it's side, and engaged it at close quaters. After an epic fight, I subdued the bear with my brute strength. I plunged my father's trusty knife into the bear's throat, slaying the beast.

(Less bullshit here and here)
In relation to the last post, I've read Watchmen 3 times through now (Then lent it to Mark M.)

(Warning, Spoilers:)

Watchmen, to me, is about morality, and the concept of good and evil. Watchmen gives us a few, very opposing, ideas of good and evil, through several characters.

Ozymandias, the "villain" embraces the "Ends justify the means" concept. He wants the very best for humanity, and feels that he is the saviour of humankind. He actually looks down upon the rest of man as needing a guiding hand, and not knowing what is good for them. This wears on him, and it shows through the comics. What he's doing is right, but the steps towards it pain him.

The Comedian, who is explored through flashbacks, is nihilistic and cynical. He "gets the joke" as Rorschach says. He knows that the common person needs a figurehead, someone to rally under. As long as he does token "good" acts, he will be embraced by the American people. "Good" for the comedian is only what is in fashion at the time. His personal actions are otherwise deplorable, he raped a fellow crime-fighter, as well as murders a pregnant woman.

Doctor Manhattan, the only real Superhero in the book, is utterly unconcerned with humanity. He's incredibly fatalistic, paralyzed because of his ability to see the past, future and present together. He sees humanity as unimportant, his only ties to it being emotional connections with a few select people. Morality and any concept of evil or good are entirely unimportant to him.

Rorschach is one of my favorite comic book characters. He's an sociopathic, right-wing, conspiracy nut. Evil must be punished in the most harsh way possible, even if it means torture and murder. Rorschach stands for a very different "truth, justice and the american way"

On the whole, The story of Watchmen serves simply as a device to explore the characters. The characters themselves exist, more or less, to explore morality, good and evil, and the entire concept of masked superheros.

Let me bend over to make this EASIER!!!

*Fumes*

Anyone who's been a student probably has an earful about textbook prices. I got a few of mine used, and one or two new. The most I've spent on a book is $80. To me, that's about as much as I'd spend. That book was pretty decent. Large, full colour, full of usable information. I'd actually want to keep it for personal reference.

One of the required items on our list is "The Science of Early Childhood development" It's an online resource. I took a course previous to college that used this resource, as I still have the disks that I took my course with. We never had to use it in our first semester (even though it was "required" for 2 courses)

Well, that was 1st edition, all the first editions have expired. The entire course is online now, no disks required. You'd think this would make it cheaper. You'd also think it would be cheap, because it was developed by Red River itself!

$100

For a 2 year ACCESS CODE. The catch is that you have to be a current student to use it. Since I graduate in a year, I only really get access for one year. I won't be able to use it for personal reference, or give it to someone else, or check back in the future. I don't even have any gaurantee that We'll actually use it, since we haven't required it the two other times it's been claimed we do.

Posted on Craigslist vegan discussion:

This woman at work is Vegan and < Agripa > 09/20 21:01:29

I am attracted to her. I am not at all vegan, enjoying my carnivorous nature. The question I have is that if I should get her out on a date and avoid a delicious steak in the process, and I must suffer through a vegan meal in some tarnished alternative part of town as part of the seduction game, what fare shall I partake that would not get me all gassed up and possibly prove an embarassment once we return to her beatnik abode for drinks?

Bike Trip!

I'm planning a weekend camping trip by bike for the Labour Day weekend I was thinking somewhere close, nothing too hard. St. Malo or Stephenfield, possibly. If anyone is interested, let me know.

EDIT: It'll likely be Bird's Hill. It's 35km from my house, Which will take about 2-3 hours. We would leave on Saturday morning.

I have a spare bicycle rack or two I could lend out, and Once I replace my tools (stupid Westjet) I can handle repairs that may arise. I will bring cooking equipment, a tarp and other general camping stuff.

So quick update, since Crazy guy on a bike is down.

Bonnie May and Doug had to turn back from Kenora, so I went on alone. I met up with two other cyclists. Matt and Dave. They're both cycling across Canada, BC to Newfoundland. They didn't know each other before they started, now the 3 of us have been sharing a few days of Adventure. We're in Thunder bay right now, staying with a friend of Dave's.

<a href="http://s310.photobucket.com/albums/kk411/ijgrant86/?action=view&current=P1010034.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk411/ijgrant86/P1010034.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

My Camera is working now, so I'll have pictures up shortly!

I have all my camping supplies now, I'm super excited to hit the road. This is my setup:

-The Nameless Surly Long Haul Trucker: It's pretty much stock, except for a few changes

-Axiom Journey racks, front and back
-Scwalbe Marathon plus tires (I love these things, they're flatproof)
-numerous widgets, lights, computers etc.
-Huuuuge fenders with mudgards. Fenders keep me and my stuff clean.

-MSR Hubba Hubba tent. It's mustard coloured, sleeps two people if you don't mind being cozy...
-MEC sleeping pad
-Big green sleeping bag, with waterproof stuffsack. It's soooo comfy
-Thermarest pillow (creature comforts!)
-Huge Panniers (65 Litres!)

I still need some sort of stove, I can probably dig up some cookware from my mom's basement as well

Well, I bjorked (broke) my back wheel. The road salt from the winter started to eat away inside and my spoke nipples started breaking. I took the entire wheel apart and I have to rebuild it now. I'm going to be out a bicycle for a few days. It's very infuriating, I feel like It's just extra trouble to go anywhere.

http://www.surlybikes.com/lht_comp.html

This is going to be my next bicycle. I've been thinking about buying a touring bike for a year or so, and this one is pretty much where it's at. I love the colours, Mashed pea green and grandma's bathroom blue.

I took 3 weeks off in July. I'm bouncing between taking a bike tour with Doug and Bonnie, going on another one (anyone want to join?) doing the fringe, and just sitting at home. It seems that quite a few of my friends are going to be gone for a while this summer.

Long time, no see, LJ land!

I started college Yesterday, in my two day a week Early Childhood education program. It's very exciting, and super relevant. There are 24 people in my class, with 3 guys (including me!) So that's a bit of a surprise!

I'm meeting lots of interesting people, and having my money stolen from me by my book list.

Holy crap, does every trailer for an action/fantasy movie just HAVE To have some intense Wagner-like musical backing, the same narrator, and be interspersed with labels like "JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME" "EPIC ADVENTURE"

Doug and I started a big clean up of the workshop in the basement, in preparation for the arrival of a truing stand. A few more tools, and We'll pretty much be able to handle anything!

I'm bracing for the winter, I need to keep active, and keep my ride in top shape. I'm glad I have a few friends who make me go places and do things (you know who you are!)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=DhZHTfBDO00

And this why you have to listen to Destroyer now, Marika

Everything Will Be Okay

It's always surprising, this sense
of relief. When you kiss me
unexpectedly, I'm reminded of
the time I left a shoe-box containing
ten or eleven thousand dollars on a
coffee table in a hotel lobby in Northern Italy.
I was between floors in the elevator,
staring at my reflection knowing something
was missing when I remembered what was,
and pushed every button and rolled through
the doors, sprinted hallways in search of the
universal symbol for stairs, barreled
down six flights, and found it
waiting there, untouched,
and haloed by the light
of late-afternoon.

©2004 John K Samson

NEWSFLASH:

I'm finished my bicycle! The Queen of hearts is together in all her retro-glory. I will have pictures up soon!

I need some new music, but every time I go to buy a CD, it's the same thing:

Iain: Oh, look, It's Immaculate Machine/The New Pornographers/Belle And Sebastian... WAIT... Is that a Destroyer album?!! It's mine!

30 minutes later, I'm at home, Danny Bejar humming in my ears. I'm not kidding, It's happened three times already.
